Create your own Web Map

Introduction:

The online learning environment means that we are able to all learn together without actually being together in the same location. This means we have a wide variety of students located in different parts of the country and sometimes the world. This assignment is meant as a way for us to learn more about you and where you come from by creating a web map on YourGmap.com. YourGmap.com is a website that you can allows you to create web maps with points or markers that can be displayed with detailed descriptions. YourGmap.com then allows you to share your map with everyone or those in which you allow to view it. YourGmap.com is an excellent web tool that you may use eventually for clients or your own personal website.

Assignment:

For this assignment you will be creating a Gmap of your local area, possibly you'll want to share important local history spots in your area, local businesses, or even your favorite restaurants. The important part is that you travel to these points and create your Gmap using your mobile phone. If you don't have a phone that has access to the internet you could also complete this assignment using a pen and paper and creating your Gmap once you return.

The main point of this assignment is for your classmates to grasp an understanding of where you live, what are some of your favorite places to go, what are some tourist hotspots etc. Do not worry about the design or markers of your Gmap initially, worry first about creating markers and creating a basic definition. This assignment may very well open up your eyes to somethings in your area that possibly you didn't care to notice before. As you travel you may consider adding website addresses for any businesses, historical locations or restaurants that you come across on your adventure.

Directions:

  1. 1. Visit YourGmap.com
  2. 2. Choose “Create Your First Map,” button
  3. 3. Enter a name for your map
  4. 4. Choose “Create New Location,”
  5. 5. Enter a name for your location as well as an address and comment
  6. 6. Leave the default marker setting for now
  7. 7. Hit “Create”
  8. 8. Start again with step 4 for your next location
  9. 9. Create at least 10 points or locations on your map

Once finished hit the “Preview Publish Button,” at the top of the page. Enter information as your login and hit sign-up. Once signed up click on the "Publish," button. Do not worry about the design or your map at the moment, you can make changes to your map once you return from the activity.

After you return from your trip, you may add additional comments to your map markers and change the design of some of your markers if you wish. Once you are satisfied with your map, choose publish and copy the link and post to the discussion area with a short description of your adventure and what you learned.
